Pitaya (Dragon Fruit) Fab4 Smoothie

If you haven’t tried pitaya (also known as dragon fruit) you are missing out! It’s an explosion of taste, texture, color and nutrition. It makes an amazing Fab4 smoothie or a smoothie bowl. And, similar to its South American sister-food acai, pitaya is packed with immunity boosting vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Where To Buy Pitaya (Dragon Fruit)

Look for frozen Pitaya (dragon fruit) in the frozen fruit section of your grocery or health food store. You can buy it pureed in packs or cubed. I always keep it my freezer so I can whip up a quick smoothie or a smoothie bowl.

Extra Nutrition: Blender Bombs & Vital Proteins Collagen

I always drop a Blender Bomb into my smoothies, but if you don’t have one, don’t fret. Blender Bombs are pre-portioned nuggets that you can drop into your blender (along with fruit, greens and liquid) for a nutritional boost. They are plant-based, gluten-free and made with real food ingredients. They’re currently available only via mail order and will keep unrefrigerated for three weeks and longer in the freezer. You can read my full review of Blender Bombs HERE.

The other smoothie ingredient I can’t live without is Vital Proteins Collagen. Depending on my mood, I use either the tasteless Collagen Peptides or the Vanilla Collagen in this recipe. Both of them add protein, as well as all of the other benefits of collagen for a healthy gut, stronger hair and nails, etc. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and helps give structure to our hair, skin, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons in our body.

When we get older, the production of collagen begins to slow down. As a result, skin can become fragile and less elastic. In addition, hair starts losing its color, joints aren’t as flexible and bone may lose their density. Supplementing with collagen may help you improve your body’s collagen levels.

All About Fab4 Smoothies

The Fab Four framework (protein, fat, fiber and greens) was developed by celebrity nutritionist and best-selling author Kelly Leveque in her book “Body Love.” Fab Four meals turn off hunger hormones, squelch inflammation, and provide the body with the perfect complete meal of essential nutrients. The Fab Four provides the structure for eating healthy without “eat” and “do not eat” lists.

Kelly created the Fab Four Smoothie formula to help her clients  build a low sugar meal replacement smoothie. This is very different from the many juice shops, grocery smoothie bars and smoothie recipes online, which can be loaded with sugar, specifically fructose sugar from excess fruit, agave, dates, and juice. When it comes to energy, skin health, and weight loss, the #fab4smoothie is the key! The Fab Four formula limits fruit and instead helps you fill up on protein, fat, fiber and greens which naturally help to elongate and balance your blood sugar curve.
