I’m suuuuuper late to the party here. I have no idea how I’ve had an iPad since 2010 and I just bought a keyboard for it last week. Here’s the headline: The Apple Smart Keyboard for iPad is amazing and if you have an iPad, you NEED one.
Last weekend I went out of town to a conference and I accidentally forgot my laptop. (Yes, I went to a writing retreat without my computer. However I had my trusty iPad and I decided on a whim to stop by the Apple Store in San Francisco and take a look at the iPad keyboards.
Up until now I felt like I never “needed” a keyboard for my iPad because I use it primarily for reading, basic email and social media. Honestly, I didn’t even realize how much typing I did on it until I purchased this keyboard.
How the Apple Smart Keyboard for iPad Works
Basically the Apple Smart Keyboard is a full sized keyboard that is integrated with an iPad cover. When the cover is closed it looks exactly the same as my old iPad with the cover on it. But when you open it … magic! The cover flips into a stand and the keyboard makes it so easy to type, even in really tight spaces. I used this on my lap at the workshop and it was completely comfortable.
The best part? No bluetooth to connect. No need to charge the keyboard/cover (it pulls its power right from your iPad). Once you snap it on there for the first time, you just charge your iPad like normal and the keyboard is always available if you need it.
And if you don’t need to use the keyboard, it tucks away and you can forget that it’s even there. When I’m reading in bed at night it doesn’t feel any heavier or bulkier than my old cover.
The only downside? Like everything Apple it’s a little pricey. The smart keyboard to fit my 12.9 inch iPad costs $169. If you have the smaller 10.5 inch iPad, it costs $159.
