READ THE JANUARY 2026 GROWNUPDISH NEWSLETTER

December was a whirlwind and 2026 has been a doozy so far. I’ve been putting off sending this newsletter in light of recent current events that have left me reeling (and I know I’m not alone.) I’m struggling with posting recipes and product reviews and funny memes in light of the barrage of horrible news: from ICE raids, to Venezuela, to the daily erosion of decency and kindness. I’m tired, scared and horrified – not to mention furious.

I don’t have any simple answers except to say that we can’t look away. And if you feel overwhelmed, grief-stricken and like your brain has short circuited under the daily barrage of cruelty and chaos: that response is not a failure. It’s evidence of your humanity.

We were not designed to absorb this much violence, dishonesty, erosion of norms, and state-sanctioned harm on a daily loop. We were not meant to normalize terror or accept gaslighting as leadership. If your body is rejecting it—good. That means your heart still works.

I don’t have a lot answers but this video really helped me put language to what I’ve been feeling. And for what it’s worth, here are a few things I’ve been trying to do to stay regulated:

  • Leaning into friendships and community. Honestly, this is what is saving my mental health these days.
  • 10 minute morning meditation. Paul and I have been doing a guided meditation together first thing in the morning (before we pick up our phones.)
  • Analog hobbies: coloring, needlepoint, knitting, doing a puzzle — anything to keep me from doomscrolling.
  • Saying “I don’t know yet” out loud. Especially when certainty would feel more comfortable (but false.)
  • Donate small consistent amounts to organizations that support my values.
  • Stop trying to feel unbothered. I’m owning that I’m extremely bothered, with depth and nuance.

If you’re still with me, scroll down for a few things that have been bringing me joy.
