I know just how overwhelming it can feel when you’re swapping out the regular products that you’re currently using for safer versions, but I promise that it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s why today I’m sharing my five favorite tips to start a safer skincare and makeup routine!
Why do safer products even matter to me? Let’s back up a bit…
As I’ve been working on changing my diet and living a healthier lifestyle, I’ve started doing lots of research and reading ingredient labels, I’ve was shocked to learn what was hiding in the food I was eating. How could the food industry be so sneaky, and be allowed to get away with so much?
Even knowing this, I still assumed that the products that I was putting on my skin must be safe… because why would anyone allow otherwise? Then, I came to realize that the opposite is actually true.
I then learned that the United States currently bans just 30 ingredients in personal care products, and the remaining ingredients have rarely been tested for safety. Again, WTF? compare this to the European Union that has banned or restricted 1,400 questionable or dangerous personal care ingredients or Canada that bans several hundred.
As with everything, when I know better, I try to do better. And once I learned this information, I knew I needed to start making some changes.
I’m a big believer that the products that we put onto our skin play a vital role in our overall health, and we, as consumers, get the opportunity to vote with our dollars.
This is part of why I’m so passionate about safer skincare and beauty products – and why I support companies like Beautycounter, Branch Basics, Dropps Laundry Detergent and Primally Pure! They are all cleaner brands that are committed to creating positive change in the industry.
For example, Beautycounter prohibits more than 1,500 questionable or harmful ingredients from use in their formulas, all of which you can see on their NeverList. Super rad!
Are Your Current Products Safe?
If you’re curious about the safety of the products that you’re currently using, or are looking into other products, you can easily download the Healthy Living EWG app or visit their web site. With the app, you can scan or search your current products to find out what the ratings are. It’s a great way to stay informed and choose safer products!
5 Easy Steps To Safer Skincare and Makeup
Start with the products that you use most often When I first started swapping out my skincare and beauty products, I started with the products I used most often. Every day I was using tinted sunscreen, cleanser, moisturizer, eyebrow pencil/gel, body lotion and lipstick. So I started by ordering the safer Beautycounter versions. Turns out, they worked even better than the other brand that I was using! Win, win!
Swap out as you run out When I switched to safer alternatives, I did so as I ran out of the other product that I was using. Since I needed to purchase it anyway, I figured, why not swap it out with a safer version that works just as well, if not better than the one I was using before? It can feel crazy overwhelming to think that you suddenly need to switch out everything, but that isn’t the case. There’s no rush, so go as slow (or as quickly) as you’d like!
Add in one at a time When you’re transitioning out of any of your products, it’s super important to add in one product at a time to see how your skin responds. We’re all so different, so what works wonders for me, might not be so great for your skin. This is the easiest way to figure out what works for you, and what doesn’t. Adding in one product at a time, and giving your skin at least a few days – a week to adjust, is always going to be the best approach, no matter what skincare line you’re using.
Figure out what’s worth it For me, living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean all or nothing – it’s just about finding the balance that works for you. While the majority of my products are made with safer ingredients, not all of them are. This is what works for me, and I have zero stress around the products that aren’t considered safe. I believe it’s not about doing things perfectly, but focusing on what matters the most to you, and letting go of any stress about the rest. After all, I know that stress plays a HUGE role in my overall health.
Shop sales and look for deals You know I’m a girl who looooves a bargain. So I waited for gift with purchase offers, sales and money-back offers. Beautycounter runs lots of promotions and I’ll be sharing them with you and giving you my best money saving tips.
That’s really all there is to it! There’s no need to stress or toss every product that you’ve got. To me, the stress is never ever worth it.
